Caroline Myss is a well known writer on the subject of human consciousness. She is a medical intuitive and the founder of CMED Institute, an educational centre created to help like minded individuals along the path of higher consciousness.
In early December of 2009, Caroline Myss published an open letter entitled “Welcome to the Sacred Land of “It’s-ville” on her professional website and on her Facebook home page. In it, she declared her intention to reside in ‘It’s-Ville’.
What is ‘It’s-Ville’?
Myss describes ‘it's-Ville’ as ‘that place where all the mysteries of life are solved, all the problems are resolved, all earthly insecurities are somehow taken care of, and all fantasies are fulfilled’. Myss goes on to explain that this mythical place, this place that is always somewhere else with someone else, is a fabrication of the mind. She explains that the human splits itself, and desires something different than it has, and herein begins the great journey of life into the wilderness of 'not good enough'.
Myss, on the 1st of December, decided to turn back around and face the very heart of the problem of human consciousness, that of its belief in duality. She discovered that by bringing her consciousness into the present moment, by bringing her mind, heart and spirit into being right here and right now, she was experiencing herself as whole and holy.
The Dangers of the Splitting Mind
In her letter, Myss discusses the human tendency to send off fragments of the self ‘on long quests to foreign psychic ports-of-call to check out whether there exists the potential of a better life in this or that fantasy or musing.’
As soon as the mind splits away from the present moment into the past or future, there begins a dialogue with the self introducing concepts such as ‘should’ and ‘could.’ These only bring about dissatisfaction, frustration and wishful thinking instead of total responsibility for the conditions of the present moment.
Myss says that holding onto the past ‘drains you of your spirit, and from that spins a list of negative consequences: depression, loss of creative instincts, anxiety attacks, a growing addiction to your historic self, a tendency to increase the emotional dimensions of your wounds in order to excuse why you are not acting on your present moment.’
Spiritual Leaders, Myss and The Present Moment
Siddhartha Buddha taught that the present moment awareness was the key to enlightenment. His words sparked a new religion based on the four noble truths. Lao Tzu pointed in the direction of being one with the present moment in the classic text Tao Te Ching.
The present day mystic Eckhart Tolle became famous and a leader of the great rush to present moment awareness in his book entitled The Power of Now. The internet is full of information and tips about how to achieve this elusive ‘It’s-Ville’. Its not only fashionable, but some believe its is essential for evolution as a species.
Myss’ Personal Reminders For ‘It’s-Ville’
In her honest and straight forward style, Myss writes down eight reminders for her personal journey into It’s-Ville. She starts with giving up her search for any other place other than where she is at ‘right now’. She reminds herself and her readers about the dangers of fragmenting the self, and that although it will hold its challenges, living in the present moment is a grace that allows 'what is' to manifest in her life.
One of Myss’ longtime practices involves reflecting on her day before she goes to sleep. As one of her final reminders, she poses the question, ‘Am I shattered and fragmented, or am I present in the moment?’ By retraining her mind patterns and habits, she hopes to help discipline her mind and bring it back into It’s-Ville.
Myss invites her readers to come along with her on her journey into the present moment and ‘drop her a line’ about their progress. Myss is a modern day mystic. She shares her understanding and growth with thousands of people around the world through the internet. She writes about her plumbing and her house guests, and she sees with the eyes of the soul. She is forging ahead, in this modern age, bridging the gap between mind, body and spirit. Her stories, told with simplicity and honesty shine like a light in the darkness for fellow seekers.
